The Alaouite Dynasty are the Sultans of Morocco since the early 17th century. Their Name refers to Ali, the son in law of the prophet Muhammad.

On old flag charts and in books from that time Morocco is represented with flags like this showings scissors ad triangles on a red ground. But why scissors?

This was probably a misinterpretation of the symbol by Europeans, not knowing that the flags were not showing scissors but the Zulfiqar, the bifurcated sword Muhammad gave to Ali. It became a sign of his ancestors and Shia Islam and can also be found on other flags.
